Literary translation is a social action and as such is comprised of several parts which include its reception as a product of the cultural industry, the publishing houses, translation policies, translators, etc. Decisions relating to the purpose of the translations (whether political, commercial or cultural) arise from the political, cultural and aesthetic positions that prevail at the time. Traditionally, most publications in the Galician language are published by private Galician publishing houses. Those published by public institutions amount to about 10% of all Galician published works while the ones published by national publishing houses account for 25% of the same. This paper analyses the calls for public grants announced for translation of published texts in Galicia from the beginning of the current economic crisis (2008) to recent times (2016). These calls have caused an impact on the promotion and planning of translations within private publishing houses. Economic factors and the award criteria used during the past years are analysed, in the light of a translation policy for a subaltern cultural system

Este artículo tiene como objetivo principal contribuir a dar a conocer el papel de las responsables de las traducciones literarias hacia la lengua gallega realizadas a partir del período democrático, así como establecer una propuesta de clasificación de sus perfiles profesionales en el marco de la actividad del sector editorial. A partir del análisis de los datos registrados en el catálogo BITRAGA, investigamos sobre la función de las personas que traducen y su desarrollo social como mediadoras interculturales, agentes de transferencia, iniciadoras de proyectos y fabricantes de repertorio con capacidad para introducir nuevos debates en la política editorial de las obras traducidas. Con este trabajo damos a conocer cuáles son los circuitos que permiten descubrir si la selección de los textos responde a un encargo o a una propuesta personal de la traductora que busca darle visibilidad a una determinada obra y autoría. El estudio de los casos seleccionados y los proyectos analizados atienden a su representatividad y significación para el campo literario gallego.

The main objective of this article is to highlight the role played by women responsible for literary translations done into Galician after the democratic period, as well as to establish a proposal to classify their professional profiles within the framework of the publishing sector. This research on the functions carried out by women translators and their social development as intercultural mediators, transfer agents, project initiators and repertoire producers with capacity to introduce new debates on publishing policy of the works published, was carried out by analysing texts from the BITRAGA database. This paper throws light on whether the route taken responds to an order or the personal choice of the woman translator who tries to give visibility to a certain work or author. The case study performed and the works analysed are representative and significant to the Galician literary field

La obra Memorias dun neno labrego de Xosé Neira Vilas, considerada el bestseller de la literatura gallega, ha sido objeto de diversas clasificacións desde su primera edición hasta hoy. El objetivo general de nuestra contribución es ahondar en la literatura de la emigración y su significado para el sistema literario gallego, a través del estudio de la peripecia del autor y de la obra en contexto, así como de su recepción. Un segundo objetivo es poner el foco en los procesos de producción y edición de una obra literaria galega muy exitosa en el tiempo y con recorrido internacional. La metodología de estudio es el análisis sistemático de los peritextos de las ediciones de la obra, de la ingente correspondencia epistolar del autor y de la crítica literaria para, a través de su recepción, desgranar el/los significado(s) que la obra ha adquirido en estos cincuenta y cinco años. Este recorrido ofrece datos que nos llevan a concluir que Memorias es una obra de emigración, de largo recorrido (longseller). En nuestro trabajo, además de recopilar información crítica, contribuimos con nuevos datos sobre dos proyectos editoriales singulares (Follas Novas y Rúa Nova) que la incluyeron o proyectaron incluirla en su catálogo.

The work Memorias dun neno labrego (Memoirs of a Peasant Boy) by Xosé Neira Vilas, considered as the best seller of the Galician literature has been subject to several classifications from its first publication to the present.The general objective of this paper is to delve deep into emigration literature in order to ascertain its significance for the Galician literary system, through a study of the author’s journey and of the work in context, as well as its reception. A second objective is to look at the processes of production and edition of a Galician literary work that has become successful internationally and over time. The study methodology consists of the systematic analysis of the peritexts of the published work, of the inherent postal correspondence of the author and of the literary criticism in order to ascertain, through the reception of the work the significance gained over the past fifty-five years. This journey offers information which leads us to conclude that Memoria is a work about emigration, a longseller. Besides compiling critical information, this study throws new light on two singular publication projects (Follas Novas and Rúa Nova) which included it or intended to include it in their catalogue

Within just a generation or two of its arrival, print had become a ubiquitous and spirited part of Spain and Portugal's urban cultures. It serviced an ever-expanding reading public, as well as many and varied practical quotidian needs. Its impact on society was multi-dimensional and complex, and its social reach far broader than the civic or ecclesiastical elites were ever to be entirely comfortable with.
